Benefits of Having a Medical Marijuana Card

Age

There are certain age restrictions in place for the consumption of marijuana, depending on whether it is for recreational or medical use. For recreational users, it is required that they are at least 21 years old before they can legally consume marijuana. However, medical card holders are not subject to such age limitations, as long as they possess a valid medical card that has been obtained legally.

Possession

There are specific rules regarding the amount of marijuana that medical and recreational users are permitted to possess. Medical marijuana patients are allowed to possess up to two and a half ounces of marijuana, subject to relevant guidelines and regulations. In contrast, recreational marijuana users can possess up to one ounce of marijuana. Additionally, recreational users are permitted to possess up to five grams of concentrates or extracts. These rules are in place to ensure that marijuana is used responsibly and in a manner that does not pose a risk to public health and safety.

Taxes

There is a significant difference in the amount of tax that recreational and medical marijuana users are required to pay when making purchases. Recreational users are subject to a special tax called excise tax, which is set at a rate of 16%. This tax is in addition to the standard taxes that are imposed in Arizona. As a result, the total tax rate for recreational marijuana purchases is increased to 24.7%. In contrast, medical card holders are exempt from the excise tax, meaning that they are not required to pay this additional tax on their purchases. This can result in significant savings for medical marijuana users, who are able to access their required medication without the added financial burden of excise tax.

Cultivation

Both medical and recreational users of marijuana have the option to grow their own plants, subject to specific rules and regulations. Medical marijuana patients are permitted to grow up to 12 plants, as long as they comply with the relevant guidelines. On the other hand, recreational marijuana can also be grown by individuals who are 21 years or older. However, cultivation is regulated, and individuals are only allowed to grow up to six cannabis plants at their primary residence. This limitation is in place to ensure that marijuana is grown and used responsibly, without posing a threat to public health and safety.

Potency

When it comes to the purchase of marijuana, there are certain restrictions that are placed on recreational users. For instance, they are not allowed to purchase edibles that contain more than 10mg THC per serving, and the maximum amount of THC per package that they can purchase is 100mg. Additionally, recreational users are limited to purchasing no more than 5 grams of concentrate per transaction.
However, medical card holders do not face such limitations when it comes to purchasing marijuana. They are free to purchase any form of consumption and are not restricted by potency limits. Whether it’s edibles or concentrates, medical card holders can purchase products that meet their specific needs and preferences without any restrictions.

Purchasing

When it comes to purchasing marijuana, there are different rules for recreational and medical users. Recreational users are allowed to buy up to one ounce of marijuana per transaction. This limit includes no more than five grams of concentrates or extracts. On the other hand, medical marijuana patients have a higher purchasing limit. They can buy up to two and a half ounces of marijuana every two weeks. These purchasing limits are designed to regulate the use of marijuana, ensuring that it is consumed responsibly and does not pose a threat to public health and safety.

Workplace

Even though recreational use of marijuana has been legalized, it’s important to note that it does not necessarily affect how employers, landlords, and independent agencies handle their policies. These entities can still enforce their policies and deny services based on an individual’s consumption of cannabis. Under Proposition 207, employers have the right to discriminate as they see fit, but they are not allowed to terminate someone (who holds a medical card) for testing positive for marijuana. They can only take action against them if they are impaired while on the job or in possession of medical marijuana while at work. To protect oneself legally, it’s advisable to obtain a medical card.

Waiting

As the demand for recreational marijuana is expected to be high, dispensaries may create separate queues for medical marijuana patients and recreational consumers. In some states where both medical and recreational cannabis are legal, medical patients are given priority over recreational buyers.
